My geography - Culture

Human geography aims to tell the story of people and the places they are connected to. How have me shaped the world and how has the world shaped me? In this project I will show the relationship between me and world，and tell you about my "geography".  I will choose the theme of culture to discuss my "geography". "Culture is a shared set of meanings that are lived through the material and symbolic practices of everyday life" (Knox et. al, 2013). Culture can be demonstrated by things, ideas, practices and processes. Culture is a central concept in geography. Through the accumulation of time, more and more culture occur  in our society. There are different culture between each country and there also have the different culture between provinces. Culture system has a great influence on our society. It affects our personality, living habit and concept. At the same time, globalization also affects the cultural communication between different countries. Places shape culture and culture shapes places. Culture has produced in different parts of characteristics of human, at the same time, different culture makes the different place. I will through language, food, building and festival to discuss my "geography".

Geography is not just places. Geography is how humans interact and  impacts places. China has the long time history and through the time people created huge cultural traits. I was born in China. There are many type of Chinese food. Each region of the cuisine is also different. We have a Sichuan cuisine, Guangdong cuisine, Shanghai cuisine and so on. I was born in Anhui province. Anhui cuisine partial salty, dark color. And Anhui people are very simple and enthusiasm. When I was 12 years old, I followed my family came to shenzhen. Shenzhen is in southern China. Shenzhen has a local language which is cantonese. When I first time come because of the language. so it is difficulty in communication with my friends. But the shenzhen people are very friendly, they are not exclusive. so I have lots of friends in Shenzhen. Because of the language environment, although I'm not fluent in cantonese, but listening is no problem.  Guangdong cuisine taste partial light. and I went to the restaurant with my family we can not adapt to it, but now my tastes have become more and more light. and Shenzhen is a electronic city. In huaqiang north street, there are all kinds of electronic products. Foxconn group is a shenzhen famous electronic products manufacturers. Here are some apple products production in here.When I was in university, I came to Canada. Go abroad for me is novel. The different cultural is big problem for me. Such as food, language, lifestyle and social aspects. When I came to Vancouver, i like the temperature, the fresh air.  But I miss home food and my family. also the language barrier makes me homesick. Slowly, I adapt to the environment, more and more like the city of Vancouver.

Interconnect

The formation of a culture can be said by human. Through our activities, and the accumulation of time has formed many aspects of culture. Culture affects us, at the same time we also affects it and let it update. There are the connection between each other. Globalization make each countries more closer.  I'm from China and in order to study abroad that I  understand  Canadian culture. When I come back to china I  feel in-adaptation. At the same time I was bring the Canadian culture back to China. I was  share the food culture of Canada with my parents, even make the steak for them. At that time I can say I change my home culture.

Food culture

Chinese food 

 Chinese has own food cultural. China has a number of foods with national characteristics and these foods are different from western food. I am born in China so Chinese food is my traditional food. In addition, at dragon Boat Festival, traditional Chinese rice pudding plays a very significant role, because we eat traditional Chinese rice pudding to commemorate a famous person of China called Yuan Qu. I like rice pudding and it is so delicious.  Moreover, at Lantern Festival, I will eat sweet dumplings with my family, because sweet dumpling means reunion. And I am born in Anhui province so I like Hui cuisine. But in my middle school, I moved to shenzhen. We like morning tea in Shenzhen. It is seems like lunch. Because of the culture and I beginning to change my eating habits. Even so I change my eating habits, but I still like Hui cuisine. Sometimes, I am introduced my friends who are from Shenzhen to ate Hui cuisine at restaurant. Some friends are very like Hui cuisine, even want to go to anhui, to understand Anhui culture.    

Korean Food

When I was in middle school, I am attracted by Korean culture. I like eating Korean food. In that time, the Korean culture is very popular in China. Many young people like Korean culture, like Korean star, Korean food and Korean cosmetic. We call it "Hallyu". And I am the part of it. There are many Korean restaurant in Shenzhen. I usually went to Korean restaurant with my friends. I think that also improve consumer culture. This seems I shape the world.

Canadian Food

When the university period, I came to Canada. I begin to touch Western culture, and to change again. These changes because the culture shapes me. Canadian maple syrup is very famous. Canada is the world's largest producer of maple syrup. I like eat maple syrup candy. There are many seafood in Canada. Moreover, seafood is my favorite food. I can eat fresh seafood in here. Especially salmon. I like eat poutine and steak. That's so delicious. 

Building culture

Chinese Building

Chinese ancient buildings base on wood architecture and people like to use enclosed form. Now Chinese people generally live in apartment in the main.  In my"geography", when I was a kid, I live in short buildings, a total of only four floors. Because China's development faster and faster and that cause the culture become upgrade. More and more tall buildings are creadted in China. Our house is popular from the original and low building moved to high-rise apartment in fashion now. There still retained the ancient Chinese architecture in Shenzhen. Through time and culture we created many cultural landscape like park and building. My parents and I went to very famous place is called queen of heaven. Here is the silk road of China's Ming dynasty and it is so amazing. I have to sigh the history of    Chinese cultural relics is so amazing.

  

Canadian Building

When I was in university, I came to Canada to study abroad. Canadian building don't like China is given priority to with high-rise buildings. Here are more house, town house and some short layer architecture. And modern building style is not complicated. Because the culture affects me, I enjoy living in the house now. At holiday, I came back to China. My parents want to change the new residence and they ask me for idea. Because of me they want to buy a house for new life.

Culture of festival and Language

Chinese festival and language

China's official language is mandarin. But each region has its own dialect. I am born in Anhui province. I speak dialect with my parents. When I move to Shenzhen, I learn Cantonese. 

The development of cultural let people create the festival. In China I enjoy the festival such as the Dragon Boat Festival, the Double Ninth Festival, Chinese New Year and so on. These festivals are difference with Western countries. Because of the different way of life, background, environment, resulting in different regions of the human race has a different mindset and different festivals. Behind every festival has a little story. When I was kids, my parents told me about the background of those festival.  And we have some custom during holiday. For example, we like eating dumplings at Chinese New Year and children can receive lucky money from elders. I like climb mountain with my parents at Double Ninth Festival.

Canadian festival and language

The official language is given priority to with English and French in Canada.  Before I came to Canada, I am learned English in China in order to overcome the language barrier in here.

There are many festival in Canada which are Canada day, Victoria day, Thanksgiving and so on. The Canada day is to commemorate the Canadian federal was established in July 1, 1867. Victoria day is to celebrate the Canadian group of the Lord's birthday. People like to prepare Turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day. I like the western Halloween. Also have the similar festival in China. But not as interesting as the western. China's tomb sweeping day seem to be very grave. But in the west, people  dress up and the children go to get candy. This seems to be a very interesting festival. Moreover, Halloween is popular in China. Young people like this festival, they dress up and go to club for relax. Last year, I came back to China at Christmas holiday. When Christmas is coming, I bought a christmas tree with my parents, and we celebrate Christmas. Because of I go aboard and I am effected by Western culture. At the same time that effect my parents and our family culture. Nowadays, many Chinese people enjoy Christmas. There are many activity during Christmas because of young people who like me enjoy this holiday.
